The building is of circa 1827 and appears on Robert Cooper's plan of York 1832. The property is described as a ‘mansion and pleasure grounds' in the first rate assessment in 1837.

By 1892 the building was described as Government House and was occupied by Major General Charles Frederick T. Daniel C.B. One of many distinguished visitors was the Prince of Wales who stayed as a guest in July 1898 whilst visiting one of the many fayres held in the city of York.

The property remained in Government hands passing through various departments but including being the Command Pay Office of the War Department through World War Two.

In 1985 we purchased the property and undertook extensive alterations and repairs to the building restoring it to it's former glory. Initially we opened as a 14 bedroom hotel then in 2006/7 a new chapter in the house's history began with the complete refurbishment of the original building and a sympathetic extension being added. Over the course of 2015 and early 2016 all of the public areas, the bar, restaurant, lounge plus all of our Standard, Family and Superior bedrooms have been further refreshed.

This Georgian mansion is in York city centre. It mixes original features with modern style and facilities, including car parking and free Wi-Fi.

The house was originally built around 1827, and it mixes original character and high ceilings with modern luxury. It has many historical artefacts associated with Winston Churchill, and each room has a flat-screen TV and modern bathroom.

The award-winning brasserie serves fresh, locally sourced, seasonal Yorkshire food in a modern British style. The Wellington Bar offers a wide range of drinks. The Churchill Hotel has a newly-opened, large beer garden with wood burning pizza oven for sunny days.

The Churchill Hotel is in beautiful, quiet grounds. York Minster is 700 metres away and the shops and restaurants are a short walk from the hotel. York Racecourse is 10 minutes' drive away.
